Military skills/civilian applications
The Slice had asked about things readers learned to do in the military that did not have obvious civilian application.
And that prompted a note from my friend Joel Shank.
“After my pestering the high school principal for three years, the school district finally hired an instructor to teach my requested drafting as well as an art class.”
Sometimes the new instructor taught both classes together in an extra large room.
“One of the art students began questioning him abut his background and at finding out he had served in the Air Force, wanted to know why he hadn’t pursued a career with an airline after he left the service.”
Joel still enjoys recalling his answer to her.
“None of the airlines were hiring tail gunners when I got out.”
