Remembering two-newspaper households
In 1955, 13.59% of newspaper subscriber households in Spokane took both the morning S-R and the afternoon Chronicle.
Isn’t that remarkable? Now it was not unheard of for American families to subscribe to two local newspapers back then. But the two Spokane papers, though owned by the same family, had starkly differing political outlooks.
From what I gather, one was conservative and the other was really conservative. Or perhaps it was the other way around.
Perhaps that 13.59% wanted to get both sides of the story. Or more comics.
Or maybe they had encountered some newspaper delivery boys who were excellent salesmen.
