Contemplating labor and management
Not for the first time, the approach of Labor Day coincides with my need to join the ranks of bosses.
That is, I’m thinking of hiring the little boys across the street to come pick up apples in our backyard.
I would offer a fair compensation package, with benefits including snacks.
But what if the boys organize and make what I consider unfair demands regarding their wages and working conditions?
What if they engage in a work stoppage or picket my house?
That would put me in a tough spot. I like to think of myself as a friend of the worker. But I’m not made of money, as they say.
I sort of wish the squirrels would take care of the apples. They work cheap, but they’re poor at following orders.
