City needs streets leader
The recent change relative to the streets director could not come soon enough. When presented with out-of-town guests, we find it necessary to forewarn or apologize to them about the miserable state of our city’s streets.
Our streets do not need a caretaker. They need an advocate. Someone who will step out from behind his or her desk and talk incessantly about what it would take to have the kinds of streets that everyone in Spokane would like to have. To create a vision that will pique the interests of businesses and residents alike and permeate the pocketbooks of the voting public. And who will ensure that more patches do not simply crumble in their attachment to the previous ones.
Maintenance and enhancement of our streets and sidewalks reflects our image of who we are. It impacts how prospective employers, and employees, see themselves in becoming a fitting part of our community. Quality, clean, well-maintained streets and sidewalks are a necessary component of a quality community.
Mr. Mayor, please make this next appointment one of the most successful of your terms in office.
