We care about our tenants
I agree with Steve Hintyesz’ comments in his letter, “A landlord’s perspective,” (Feb. 28, 2019).
We have rental houses in Spokane Valley which we acquired gradually over 40-plus years. The houses we purchased were, for the most part, fixer-uppers. We did almost all the labor ourselves to bring them up to our standards (a house we would be comfortable living in ourselves). Our renters stay an average of 7-16 years. We only raise rents when our expenses, taxes, insurance, sewer, etc. go up.
We are currently absorbing increases in taxes because we feel we can better afford it than our renters. We genuinely appreciate and care about our tenants. They are helping us enjoy a solvent retirement. We worked hard for many years to get where we are, but without our tenants we would have failed. Adding more requirements and costs to our overhead will only hurt our tenants.
