More frightening than the virus

In Joe Machala’s letter (“What are we doing?,” March 14), he began with his criticism of everybody and anybody here and in the world overreacting to the threat of the virus and who cares because we’re going to die of something anyway.

His comments predictably morphed into conspiracy behind the outbreak and who politically is behind all this (starts with a D) because they want to destroy the economy and country. But the last sentence was what chilled me to the bones: “PS. Let’s cancel the elections.”

Our country has held elections through wars, natural and man-made disasters, tragedies and political scandal and our democratic process always endured.

I think I know the inspiration behind this last sentence: To keep politicians in office to avoid being judged. I will oppose that thinking with all my strength and hope Americans feel the same.

We have to protect our vote in upcoming primaries and November because democracy and our country’s life is at stake.
