Task Force Satisfied With Apology

Tony Stewart (pictured in SR file photo) tells Huckleberries that the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations is satisfied with the apology offered by Trustee Brent Regan to students, parents, administrators and constituents of the Coeur d'Alene School District. Regan has apologized on three separate occasions re: an insensitive, anti-Obama "joke" he told at a legislative forum earlier this winter. Also, Stewart said remarks by School Board Chairman Tom Hamilton and one other trustee at a recent School Board member indicated that the board took the error in judgment by Regan seriously. Stewart told Huckleberries that the task force was criticized by some for calling a press conference to denounce Regan's comment and by others for not going far enough. The task force took a stand, he said, for three reasons: 1. To let all students in the Coeur d'Alene district know they're important; 2. To let office holders know that they have a serious responsibility to watch what they say in public, and 3. To send a message to minorities that everyone is to be treated with dignify in this community.
