Careful with alternatives
As a pediatric ophthalmologist, I commend your efforts to introduce alternative therapies. I am constantly researching ways to improve the care I provide to my patients. Unfortunately, the article “Retraining the Brain” (July 28) was very misleading. It is the anecdotal experience of one person who is now encouraging people to pursue unorthodox therapies. Amazingly, the article extrapolates her experience to potentially being able to help learning disorders and soldiers returning from war!
I have many patients who have sought alternative treatments, only to be inadequately treated during a critical time of development. Several of these patients now have irreversible vision loss. I encourage all patients to ask their trusted eye care provider, ophthalmologist or primary care provider before undergoing expensive and time intensive treatments that remain unproven.
