Nonwar nonworthy

The Spokesman-Review

Ironically, when I tried to contact Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, via e-mail, on their Web sites, I could find no heading for “Afghanistan War.”

Is this not unbelievable, considering the president has chosen to send 30,000 sons/daughters to Afghanistan – for what, exactly? His speech was meaningless, and contrary to distancing himself from Vietnam days, this is exactly another “no-war war.”

What exactly are we trying to accomplish? We send our men to play yet another game that really, really isn’t truly a war (such as no fighting at night, no going into anyone’s homes, etc). They have to be sensitive and nice – these soldiers of ours – making sure they do not offend the enemy. So, could anyone in our government explain what we are trying to accomplish, because we are in no mood to have our precious men die for zero. Not again – ever!

It surely can’t be the “military/industrial machine” could it? President Eisenhower warned us about this very thing in the ’50s. That seems to be the only purpose of this “game playing” that makes sense, and never mind all the dead bodies! So just how much money will each death contribute to the industrial war machine complex? Never mind that these huge companies contributed millions to our president’s campaign. So sorry I thought of that fact. Surely our senators have added a new heading for the “Afghanistan War” to their Web sites by now.
