Attack on Wells an outrage

I read a lot of letters in these pages that I don’t agree with, but I very seldom get mad at the writers. I don’t share the gun rights positions of many contributors, for example, but I seldom get mad at their letters. They have a legitimate point of view, even if I don’t share it.

But I must say that George Britton’s comment about “Ron Wells and his ilk” (Letters, Feb. 25) makes my blood boil. Britton should take a walk in the Carnegie library district of downtown sometime. Many significant buildings that were in a state of decay have been brought back to life through Ron Wells’ many efforts. To put Wells in a category of people who “could care less what consequence they may have on the landscape and environment of the Spokane River as long as they can fill their pockets with money” is an outrage that insults a career of valuable contributions to our civic heritage.

Before reading Mr. Britton’s rant I was on the fence about the old YMCA. His letter, along with your editorial (Feb. 25) about Riverfront Park safety, have convinced me that the City Council should vote to preserve the Y rather than tear it down.
