City is top heavy

In 1985, the employees of Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. took a $4.50-per hour pay cut in wages and benefits to ensure that the company remained viable in the face of a budget shortfall, not unlike the one the city of Spokane is presently facing.

As it stands right now, our city government is top-heavy. Those who should be taking the pay cuts and making sacrifices to save jobs aren’t. The mayor, chief of police and all department heads could and should be willing to sacrifice so that the jobs of our police and firefighters are saved. Again, they are not.

As a 36-year employee of Kaiser Aluminum, I was one of the many who took a pay cut to save the company and our jobs. Kaiser did it. The city of Spokane is just as capable.
