Present school site best

Yes, the school board is entrusted by the voters to “modernize” Jefferson School, BUT NOT to move it five blocks down the road, taking away seven acres of Lewis and Clark High School’s sports complex and placing it on historic Manito Boulevard.

This will not improve safety issues. Many Spokane schools are located on busy streets. As testified, more children are injured on quiet streets than busy ones. No child has been injured at the school crossing on Grand that we know of. Fifty-five percent of Jefferson students live east of Grand. Because of a new business replacing Jefferson, traffic will be increased on that corner, on 37th and on narrow Division.

One thing that would decrease the traffic and the need for a “mega” school would be if the 155 Montessori children were moved to another location, such as Hutton or Pratt. Both have room.

Over 1,000 people have signed a petition to modernize Jefferson at its current location because it is the best choice.
