Adults but not mature
Colleges should have the right to make their own decisions, but some Idaho legislators thought colleges needed help keeping their campuses safe, (“Lawmakers haven’t proven the need to allow guns on campus,” March 12).
I do not agree with these legislators. Even though college students are adults, many of them are not mature enough to avoid bad decision-making, such as excessive drinking, using drugs and fighting. Also, research shows that a significant number of killings and suicides happen to people at this age. Colleges should have the right to ban guns from their campuses in order to keep their students safe.
I understand that many people believe that since college students are technically adults, they should be able to handle guns appropriately and not make bad choices, but this is not always true. Most college students are still immature, so a gun accident could happen at anytime, anywhere.
Legislators should leave colleges to make their own decisions about gun policies on their campuses. They may believe it is their job to decide on issues like this, but colleges should have the right to choose what is best for their campus and students.
