Sparkle without phosphates

I’m confused. Why are so many folks whining about the phosphate-free dishwasher detergent?

I have no spots and sparkly clean dishes with very minimal prewashing. I use a store-brand gel in a relatively old Whirlpool with no whistles or bells and get great results. Even if I didn’t, I want to save the river.

What gives? Could it be newer dishwashers or what?
