Nuke closures overlooked
Amy Goodwin’s column of May 27, concerning the “firsts” attributed to the state of Vermont, included the possibility that it might be the first state to shut down its nuclear power reactor, referring to the Yankee nuclear plant.
If she had researched a bit harder she might have learned that the concerns of environmentalists caused the Trojan nuclear power plant of Portland General Electric Corp in Rainier, Ore., to be decommissioned in 1993 and demolished in 2006. Also, plants in New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania were closed years ago. This hardly makes Vermont the leader in the closings of nuclear power plants.
It’s sad that pundits, for whatever reason, frequently make such broad claims, because it casts doubts about other claims in their columns.
