Cowan is like Foley

While most will remember my cousin, Tom Foley, as speaker of the House, Eastern Washington’s longest-seated congressman and ambassador to Japan, my family knows him as the grandson of earnest farmers, who never forgot where he came from, and who never forgot the importance of getting along with others.

During his tenure, Foley worked tirelessly with those across the aisle to protect farmers and protect our agribusinesses in Eastern Washington. Now, for this year’s election to the House of Representatives, I think Rich Cowan is this generation’s answer to Speaker Foley’s legacy.

Cowan will also work tirelessly with those across the aisle. Clearly, letting the Farm Bill expire was a loss of leadership by our current congresswoman, and something Cowan plans to fight for.

I have met Rich Cowan. He is thoughtful, personable but serious, intelligent but approachable, and is someone who fully represents the interests of Eastern Washington.

Unfortunately, our Congress is at its lowest approval rating. Few are playing nice in the sandbox. Instead of someone like Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is more focused on her career than those she represents, Eastern Washington needs to harken back to the days of my cousin and elect Rich Cowan.
