Ethics board out of bounds

In the April 22 Spokesman-Review, I noted an article titled, “Ethics board files OK for free golf tickets.” In essence, the board has determined that it is OK for Washington legislators to accept free $110 tickets to the U.S. Open golf tournament so as to tour the Chambers Bay Golf Course in Pierce County in June because they would be conducting “official duty.”

Further, it is also stated that: “Separately, a bill that recently passed both chambers of the Legislature would broaden the definition of legislators’ ‘official duty’ to include any activities that can be justified by the state constitution.”

Are they kidding us? So much for the $50 value limiting gifts to the legislators. And where this will end is anybody’s guess. Perhaps we should start with an ethics board to look over the ethics board.
