Activist’s legacy far-reaching
I was saddened to read about the Aug. 26 passing of civil rights activist Amelia Platts Boynton Robinson. Although I have been out of touch for the last few years, I was honored to have met her on several occasions during two decades working with her international organization. Thanks for printing that article on a true American treasure.
The president shortchanged her in his written statement. Amelia’s legacy goes far beyond her decadeslong struggle for the “fight to protect everyone’s right to vote.” Amelia co-founded an international human rights organization, the Schiller Institute (named for Friedrich Schiller, often referred to as the “poet of freedom”).
Using the same courage, passion and purpose to make the world a better place for all, her legacy not only encompasses the fight for voter rights but also the global fight for human rights. That is the fight she would want us all to participate in. In her words, “Silence is no longer golden.”
