Greed harms Mt. Spokane

Regarding “Court temporarily halts Mt. Spokane expansion project (Jan. 25)”: Our Creator gave people our planet, Mother Earth, for us to live on in peace. Then ugly greed loomed.

Have you ever heard of the seven deadly sins? Greed is among them. I was asked to speak at a Spokane Valley hearing concerning Mt. Spokane. Only a few of us were allowed to speak, whereas expansion supporters were allowed many. One man roared that for us (members of the Spokane Tribe), it was all about greed. Really, our concern is for the sacredness of our Mother Earth.

Mt. Spokane is part of our history, as it is for other tribes. We adore that place for its beauty. It speaks to us; provides us with the food and medicine we gather there. Our interest is not for financial gain, but for reasons of spirituality. Modern things are good as long as the nature of our Mother is not desecrated. We don’t stab our Mother’s body or cut her hair for financial gain.

I pray our Mother, who gives so much, will not have her body once again desecrated. How much more can we take; with mines, ski trails, oil spills, etc?
