School meals under attack

When conservatives spend trillions on wars and Wall Street bailouts, and then want to cut $2 billion earmarked for providing breakfasts and lunches for children in poverty “in order to balance the budget,” they lack perspective.

I figure they know the wars and bailouts are much more responsible for the debt than some free breakfasts, but they think they can fool people by simply emphasizing the word “billion” and acting like they’re in awe of how much money that is. They count on people not knowing that a trillion is a thousand billion.

The thing is, I fear they might be right. They might be fooling enough people that they’ll get their way. On behalf of hungry schoolchildren everywhere, I want to congratulate them on their cleverness.
