Mitsubishi Lancer: Great bones, more keep compact Lancer relevant

The current-generation Lancer debuted a decade ago, an eon in automotive time. Competitors have come and gone and technology has swept the industry. Today, small sedans like the Lancer face stiff competition not only from each other but also from crossovers. 

In fact, Mitsubishi’s best sellers are a pair of crossovers — the midsize Outlander and compact Outlander Sport — both of which have been refreshed more recently than their sedan sibling. 

When it debuted, the Lancer rode on a platform sturdy enough to support its top model, the 300-horsepower Lancer Evolution sport sedan. In even its most basic form, the Lancer handled like a more expensive car.

That born-in-the-bones quality lingers. The Lancer ($18,205, including destination) is one of the most responsive models in the segment, especially in GT ($21,405) and Ralliart ($30,305) trims. With their sport-tuned suspensions and upgraded engines (and, in the case of the Ralliart, much more), they outperform their siblings and much of the competition, as well.

It’s inside where the Lancer’s age shows most clearly. The cabin is comfortable, the seats are good and the controls are easily understood, but uninspired design, so-so materials quality and abundant hard plastics argue for a makeover.
I recently tested a 2015 Lancer GT. The GT trim is available only with front-wheel-drive and with a 168-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine it shares with the AWD-only SE ($20,995). The GT is further equipped with a standard five-speed manual transmission or the continuously variable (CVT) unit I tested.

Though prone to the usual CVT quirks, Mitsu’s unit redeems itself with a Manual mode, paddle shifters and simulated ratios that give the driver the ability to “downshift” for quicker acceleration on freeway ramps and the like. 

The GT earns an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined (23 city/30 highway with the CVT and 22/31 with the manual). The SE registers 25/22/29.

The base engine is a 148-hp 2.0-liter four mated to a five-speed stick or optional CVT. With the CVT, estimated efficiency is 29 mpg combined (26 city/34 highway); with manual at 28/25/34.

The GT and Ralliart share an aggressive front fascia, with gaping, glowering grille and menacing air dam. Inside the GT cabin, white contrast seat and door stitching (new for ’15) join a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob in classing up the joint.

A six-speaker audio system includes high-definition radio, satellite radio and a 6.1-in. touchscreen display. Mitsu’s FUSE connectivity system, with USB port, is standard on the GT, as are a rearview camera, rear-wing spoiler, automatic climate control, keyless remote entry with alarm and 18-inch alloy wheels.

This year, CVT models can be ordered with a new Sun and Sound package including a nine-speaker 710-watt Rockford Fosgate sound system, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights and a power glass sunroof.

Thrifty shoppers who seek an engaging drive and available AWD, and who can live without the latest in luxury and tech, should give the Lancer a good look. It’s bones are sound.
