WSU practices early and indoors
The Washington State went into the indoor practice bubble for a Saturday morning practice in order to turn up the heat and replicate the conditions they’ll face next weekend in Tempe, Arizona. The practices are closed but the team let the media in for the Thursday Night Football so we have some notes on that after the jump. We’ve also got this highlight, courtesy of Gabe Marks’ Instagram account.
— The coaches have all gone out during WSU’s two bye weeks to recruit, but they all made it back in time for every practice.
“Well, when you’re building a program it’s important for us to be around the kids as much as possible,” McGuire said. “It’s incredibly important to recruit as well, no doubt about that, but right now we’ve got to try to go beat Arizona State with the guys we have here right now so it’s important that everybody be back so we can be there with them.”
— McGuire added that he expects to have the same offensive line starters against ASU as against Oregon State, meaning Jacob Seydel will continue to start at right tackle in place of the limited Cole Madison.
“He’s done really well,” McGuire said of Seydel. “I’m really proud of him. He’s done both sides and on the right side he’s had the opportunity to start and he’s played really well.”
— Linebacker Greg Hoyd continues to play well. The 6-foot-1, 225 freshman from Vista Murrieta High had an interception during the Thursday Night Football portion of practice. He is just one of a few young linebackers who are playing well, however.
“He and (Chandler) Leniu are doing really good, we’re trying to figure out where we’re going to put them in the spring,” linebackers coach Ken Wilson said. “They’re both kind of stacked at the same position (Mike) with Peyton (Pelluer) and Darryl (Monroe) and Greg made a nice play on the outside today.”
— Peyton Bender threw a deep pass that was intercepted in the end zone by Dakota Sinchak. He later threw a beautiful ball over a leaping defender to John Thompson, who caught the ball near the right sideline and then cut upfield for an easy score. Daniel Lilienthal later made a very similar play off a throw from Connor Ennis.
— Keith Harrington did not participate in the scrimmage and appeared to have a yellow “no contact” jersey hanging out of his pocket. Also limited in practice was cornerback Kevin Griffin, who left the Oregon State game early and did not return. When asked last week if Griffin was available late in the game when Marcellus Pippins checked in for Daquawn Brown, Mike Leach replied that he was not.
