The Slice: A tale of two canines continues to be told

A good dog is a great thing.

Two good dogs? Read on.

“I encountered a neighbor on a walk the other night,” wrote Jill Carlson. “She told me the sad news of the passing of Harley. I was reminded of the day some years ago when I met Harley and his good friend Jubilee.

“They had been together since Harley was little, but when I met them, Harley was in his massive prime and Jubilee was waning.

“They both enthusiastically jumped in the river after the stick that was thrown, but Harley moved twice as fast, always getting there first.

“Both turned back at the same time, and Harley overtook Jubilee well before they reached the shore. It was then I saw the magic.

“Harley would gently pass the coveted stick to his friend Jubilee, and she would be the one to carry it back. It happened every time.”

Carlson added a postscript.

“I have told this story many times and will continue to do so because if ever a tale of tender nobility deserved to be wagged, this one does.”

Slice answers: Several adult readers told of reconnecting with their seventh-grade boyfriends/ girlfriends through social media. In one instance, the old friends turned out to be living in the same Spokane neighborhood.

And in the matter of whether readers have concerns about our tap water, respondents were utterly and completely polarized.

Good times: The Slice’s recent mention of the Ice Palace reminded North Sider Trudi Brown of a time back around 1986 when her family signed up for a skating class called something like “Mom and Pop and Tots.”

“My husband had skated before, but it was a new experience for me and for our 3-year-old, Jerrod.”

But learning something can be fun, right?

“Jerrod would cry and scream during the entire hour. It got to where if we even mentioned the words ‘ice skating’ it would send him into a meltdown.”

They laugh about it now. Funny how 25 years helps you put things in perspective.
