“Fish War”

March 2, 2025

Salmon have provided spiritual and nutritional sustenance for Indigenous tribes across Washington state since time immemorial. Through treaties with tribal nations, the United States codified tribes’ rights to fish in their “usual and accustomed places.” Treaties are the supreme law of the land but in the 20th century, the state of Washington declared tribal fishing at treaty-protected sites illegal, sparking a decades-long fight captured in this 2024 documentary. Followed by a panel discussion featuring DR Michel, executive director of the Upper Columbia United Tribes and citizen of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation; Twa-le Abrahamson, environmental justice organizer and citizen of the Spokane Tribe of Indians; and Tom Keefe, retired attorney.
