WSU Webinar: “Free speech on the internet: The power of social media companies”

February 11, 2021 - February 11, 2021

Donald Trump’s banning from social media threw the spotlight on the power of private internet companies to regulate free speech. Section 230 of the 1996 Communication Decency Act protects companies from liability for content posted by users, but it has come under increasing scrutiny from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers. Margaret O’Mara (University of Washington), author of “The Code: Silicon Valley and the Remaking of America” (Penguin Press), will discuss the history of internet regulation and the future of Section 230.
