Bill would target Electoral College
BOISE – After Washington this year became the fifth state to endorse a big change in how the nation elects presidents – letting whoever wins the popular vote take the office – Idaho is poised to debate the same question. Nothing changes until enough states sign on to represent a majority of electoral votes; only about a quarter of them are on board so far. “We’re just waiting to see if there are additional states that decide to join in,” said Glenn Kuper, spokesman for Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire, who backs the move and signed the Legislature-passed bill into law in April.

Nonpartisan Idaho races get scrutiny
BOISE – Idaho’s elections last week were all officially nonpartisan city races, but there’s growing statewide debate about what role – if any – political parties should play in those contests. Boise State University political scientist emeritus Jim Weatherby said he sees a “disturbing trend” toward more partisanship in city elections not only in Idaho but across the country.
Voters league gets behind permanent absentee status
BOISE – The Idaho League of Women Voters has endorsed an initiative petition to let Idahoans request permanent absentee ballot status, rather than have to request an absentee ballot every time there’s an election, a change that’s been supported in the past by the state’s county clerks but rejected by state lawmakers. “The league has a long history of supporting voter registration and ballot access,” said Kathryn Bonzo, co-president of the Idaho League of Women Voters. “Permanent absentee balloting is a positive step forward for voters in Idaho.”

Idaho state legislator says he made spending ‘boo-boo’
BOISE – Idaho state Sen. Mike Jorgenson, R-Hayden Lake, says he “made a boo-boo” when he violated state campaign finance laws by spending more than $1,090 to run an ad in the Coeur d’Alene Press on Saturday favoring Coeur d’Alene City Council challenger Jim Brannon. If the expenditure was a contribution to Brannon, it exceeded the $1,000 limit on such contributions; if it was an independent expenditure, Jorgenson needed to file a disclosure form within 48 hours.
