Voters approve technical campus on Rathdrum Prairie

Voters in three North Idaho school districts Tuesday said yes to a levy that will raise property taxes for two years to build a $9.5 million professional-technical high school on the Rathdrum Prairie. Voters in Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls overwhelmingly supported the measure with 65 percent and 66 percent approval, respectively. In the Lakeland School District, the measure squeaked by, earning 55.27 percent, just above the 55 percent approval rating required.

Primary election creates odd bedfellows

When he announced his candidacy for Spokane County prosecutor, Dave Stevens called the incumbent, Steve Tucker, an “absent administrator.” But after coming in fourth in a six-way primary, Stevens said this week he will endorse Tucker for prosecutor in the November election.

Mager runner-up vote count continues

The race for second place in last week’s primary for Spokane County Commissioner Bonnie Mager’s position remained too close to call Monday. Jeff Holy shaved five votes off Al French’s lead for runner-up when 4,544 more ballots were counted. They were separated by 153 votes, 4,887 to 4,734, but more ballots are to be counted today and Wednesday.

O’Quinn finish triggers hunches, but map telling

Every campaign worth a darn leaves a losing candidate’s supporters with some hard feelings, nagging questions and what ifs. So Shelly O’Quinn’s third-place finish in a 6th Legislative District House race understandably vexes some folks who believe she has great potential to be a rising GOP star. As they ponder why she lost, some apparently have a theory that Democratic perfidy helped do her in.

Didier wants commitments from Rossi

Unsuccessful Senate candidate Clint Didier set conditions Friday for endorsing fellow Republican Dino Rossi in the race against incumbent Democrat Patty Murray. Rossi must take strong positions against abortion, taxes and government spending, said Didier, who finished third in Tuesday’s primary.

Murray begins fall race in Spokane

Democratic U.S. Sen. Patty Murray on Thursday stressed her support for programs in Eastern Washington and new financial regulations approved by Congress as she opened her general election campaign Thursday with a speech in Spokane. “I’m here to tell you Wall Street’s and big banks’ money cannot buy my vote now or any day ever. I will always fight for you,” she said in her 20-minute speech.

Allred: Otter ‘career politician’

BOISE – During Thursday’s debate with Gov. Butch Otter, Democratic rival Keith Allred painted himself as a citizen activist fighting a career politician whose three decades in office align him with special interests, not Idaho residents. Allred slammed Otter’s failed pushes in 2009 to hike gas taxes and to double registration fees for car owners – while only boosting fees on heavy trucks by 5 percent. Allred favors cutting the gas tax, then boosting fees on trucks to make up the difference.

Incumbents persevere, but challenges await

Thousands of votes are still to be counted from Tuesday’s primary, but along with most races, some lessons are clear. Lesson 1: It may be uncomfortable to be an incumbent this year, but it’s not fatal. Few incumbents were eliminated in the state’s top-two primary, but some clearly have their work ahead of them.
