Four seek to unseat prosecutor
When defense attorney Chris Bugbee addressed a room full of Republicans in June, he told them that he not only intends to defeat incumbent Spokane County Prosecutor Steve Tucker, Bugbee said he intends to retire from the office. The bold prediction not only illustrates Bugbee’s quick emergence as a front-runner but how contentious the primary contest has become.

Six candidates vie for county assessor
Spokane County Assessor Ralph Baker has more challengers than a bear has fleas – and he picked up one of them, appraiser Vicki Horton, in his own den. The den used to belong to another of Baker’s five opponents, former Assessor Sadie Charlene Cooney.

Mager faces four GOP challengers
As the only Democrat and the only woman, Bonnie Mager stands out among the candidates for her Spokane County commissioner position. Standing apart could help her survive next month’s primary election if Republicans split their votes among Steve Salvatori, Al French, Jeff Holy and David Elton. But in Washington’s top-two primary system, being the only Democrat no longer guarantees a ticket to the Nov. 2 general election.
6th candidates won’t debate before primary
It’s one of the most contested primaries in Eastern Washington, but voters won’t get a chance to see a debate of the candidates for the state House seat representing the 6th Legislative District before the Aug. 17 primary. The one debate that was scheduled for incumbent Democrat John Driscoll and Republicans Shelly O’Quinn and John Ahern was canceled after Driscoll and Ahern decided not to participate. Unlike her opponents, O’Quinn has refused to participate in video interviews on campaign issues with The Spokesman-Review.
GOP hopeful’s speech secretly taped, posted
It’s the case of the unknown videographer, and it highlights the tension between the campaigns of legislative candidates John Ahern and Shelly O’Quinn. A low-tech video of O’Quinn speaking to the Friday Morning Republican Breakfast Club was posted on YouTube in early May. O’Quinn said she was unaware she was being recorded.

Editorial: O’Quinn has right attitude for leadership
Voters in Spokane’s 6th Legislative District seemed torn two years ago. Faced with a choice between four-term Republican incumbent John Ahern and Democratic newcomer John Driscoll, they made a change, but not decisively. The election for the House seat came down to a scant 74 votes out of more than 70,000 cast. Voters in the traditionally Republican district appeared weary of Ahern’s rigid ideology. Many of them were ready to take a chance on a Democrat with free-market sympathies and ties to the city’s health care community.

All Washington counties except Pierce conduct their elections entirely by mail.
French backs off on letters
Candidate Al French says he was just trying to be helpful when he wrote letters to the editor for his supporters to sign and send. “I have several written and you can have your pick,” French told Robin Sparrow on Friday on his personal Facebook page. “I have others (supporters) that are submitting, too. Or you can write your own if you like.”
