Idaho GOP keeps its tea party platform planks

Idaho’s super-dominant Republican Party was widely expected to swing back toward the middle this year, after tea party activists peppered the party platform two years ago with planks urging abolishment of the Federal Reserve, eliminating direct election of U.S. senators and pushing Idahoans to stockpile gold - and then forced all state GOP candidates to pledge allegiance to the platform or specify publicly where they disagreed. But after last weekend’s Idaho GOP convention, very little changed.

Ruling highlights partisan split

OLYMPIA – When a divided U.S. Supreme Court settled the question Thursday of whether federal health care reform is constitutional, it turned up the spotlight on the issue for Washington’s hotly contested governor’s race. Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna, one of the original plaintiffs in the failed multistate challenge, said he was surprised by the ruling but insisted he was relieved, not disappointed.

Eye on Boise: Labrador rips immigration shift

BOISE – U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador, an immigration attorney who touted his expertise on the issue as he ran for Idaho’s 1st District congressional seat two years ago, blasted President Barack Obama’s announcement Friday of a major change in the nation’s enforcement of immigration law. The president announced that young illegal immigrants will be able to avoid deportation if they can prove they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed.

After failed House bid, Rammell moving to Wyoming

Flamboyant former Idaho gubernatorial candidate Rex Rammell said he’s given up on Idaho politics and is moving to Wyoming after losing a state legislative race for a north-central Idaho seat last month. “When I lost the race, there was nothing here to hold me,” said Rammell, a veterinarian and former elk rancher from eastern Idaho who relocated to Idaho County two years ago, though his family stayed in eastern Idaho.
