Spin Control: Seattle’s Indigenous People’s Day misses the mark

Monday is cause for minor celebration in Spokane as one of the few weekdays of the year in which “free parking” is not just a square on the Monopoly board. The city sets aside a handful of holidays to spare motorists the expense of plugging meters, but most are days like Thanksgiving and Christmas, during which there’s less demand for parking spaces except from the poor working stiffs who must come to the office to man the phones or monitor the computers while everyone else is home with the family.

Spokane’s congressional delegation promises support to combat Islamic State

Washington’s two Democratic U.S. senators and the Republican congresswoman representing Eastern Washington promised Wednesday to give President Barack Obama the tools he needs to defeat the Islamic State. In a prime-time speech on Wednesday, Obama outlined plans for defeating the Islamic State, commonly called ISIS or ISIL, which has taken over vast territory in Iraq and Syria.

McMorris Rodgers email asks whether U.S. should commit combat troops to fight ISIS

Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers is polling supporters this morning via email on whether they want to see American troops committed to “defeat and destroy” Islamic State terrorists.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers ex-aide claims retaliation

A former aide to Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers contends an ethics investigation into her campaign for a House leadership post is ramping up with allegations that she retaliated against him. An attorney for the Spokane Republican calls those comments “more frivolous allegations and information.” Todd Winer, former press secretary and adviser to McMorris Rodgers, said in an email Monday he was “breaking his silence” about what he calls the congresswoman’s scandal.

McMorris Rodgers’ town hall draws both supporters, critics

An August town hall had a very November feel Monday as U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers addressed a crowd that included her election opponent and struck an optimistic tone on many of the major issues facing Congress. “I recognize that we, in Congress, have not been able on some of the big issues – there was ‘the grand bargain,’ which I believe needs to happen – to get the job done,” said the chair of the House Republican Caucus, referring to the failed ploy to get the GOP and Democrats on board with a spending plan that would reduce the national debt. “I think everyone has played a role in that, Republicans and Democrats.”

McMorris Rodgers offers Pakootas three debates

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers challenged Democratic opponent Joe Pakootas on Monday to three debates this fall, including two in Spokane. Pakootas said he planned to counter with a proposal to do at least two more in other areas around the large 5th Congressional District. McMorris Rodgers has debated opponents at least once in her previous re-election campaigns, although scheduling has sometimes been a problem when Congress stayed in session late into the fall. Congressional candidates usually get far more invitations to debate than they accept, but this may be one of the earliest efforts by the five-term incumbent to nail down a debate schedule.

McMorris Rodgers explains vote in favor of Obama lawsuit

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers said her vote authorizing a lawsuit against President Barack Obama was cast to voice frustration over what she called executive overreach. “I certainly have heard a concern about the executive branch, the administration deciding unilaterally what the law is going to be,” McMorris Rodgers said in her downtown Spokane office Wednesday.

McMorris Rodgers will face Pakootas

Congress may be unpopular, but in Eastern Washington’s 5th Congressional District, five-term incumbent Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers was popular with voters casting ballots in Tuesday’s primary. McMorris Rodgers, a member of the GOP leadership in the House, finished the evening with more than half the votes cast in the 10-county district. She’ll face Democrat Joe Pakootas, the chief executive officer of the Colville Tribe’s business operations, in the general election and said she was encouraged by the strong showing in the four-way primary.

Shawn Vestal: Definition of war gets lost in rhetoric

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers for – when taking to the lectern last week as the GOP’s woman-in-chief – not calling her proposed legislation a “war.” Of course, the dude standing next to her did. The House GOP, said Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado in trying to rebut the Democrats’ “war on women” thing, will now wage a “war for women.”
