The World's Most Exclusive Boys Club

By Charles Apple

With the passing of President Jimmy Carter in December 2024, the membership of America's most exclusive club — that of living presidents — shrank from five to four (counting the former president who is now back in the White House).

In the last 40 years, America has had a wealth of presidential experience at is disposal. (We had up to six living presidents for brief periods in 1993 and 2018).

Presidents and ex-presidents get together fairly regularly to compare notes, send each other on special diplomatic missions and generally give the new guy moral support. But you don’t often see pictures of those meetings, unless they’re taken at the opening of a presidential library or at a state funeral.

But it's rare in American history to have access to so much presidential experience at once. (At times, we've had just one living president.)
