In the late 1800s, America entrepreneurs have created a revolution in retail business by appealing to the thriftiness of the shopper and offering a wide variety of merchandise to save customers time. This was the origin of the dime store.

1955 - The Newberry store on Riverside was a destination for thrifty shoppers with a wide variety of merchandise at low prices. Also in 1955, Northtown Mall opened, and it yet another shopping option that drew people away from downtown. This Newberry store closed in 1995.

2018 - Looking east from the STA Plaza shows the 600 block of Riverside Ave. where the J.J. Newberry store stood from 1930 to 1995. In 1946, Newberry tore down its building and put up a new building on the west half of the block. A few years later, it took the whole block except for Leed Shoes and Hughes Apparel.
