Then and now: Greenacres, Washington
A front page article in the June 21, 1901 Spokane Chronicle spoke in glowing terms of a planned settlement 10 miles east of Spokane to be called Greenacres: “The new town or village, whichever it may be called, will not be a mining center, nor will manufacturing be its chief drawing card, but fruit raising will give employment to its inhabitants in most cases, while the crops of timothy (hay) it is claimed will startle the people who believed nothing could be grown in Spokane valley with its gravel. Vegetables will also be raised in large quantities.” Related Story: History of Greenacres, Washington.

The Greenacres Shopping Center, a crescent of shops along East Appleway seen here in a 1954 photo, was a commercial center for the unincorporated agricultural community, which was founded started at the turn of the 20th century. The strip of shops date at least back to the 1920s, when a grocery store, later Greenacres IGA, was built there. Over the years, the center has included a gas station, pharmacy, cafes and various stores.

The Greenacres Shopping Center, anchored by a grocery store since the 1920s, was the commercial center for Greenacres, a turn-of-the-century land development promising prosperous orchards and farms on 10- and 20-acre parcels, starting around 1901. Greenacres was in unincorporated Spokane County and parts of Greenacres were absorbed into the cities of Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake when they were formed.
