The sturdy, two-story building on the North Monroe corridor has been home to a plumber, an antique shop and a public radio station in its more than 110 years of existence.

The Hoban building was built with space for retail businesses on the ground floor and apartments above at 2319 N. Monroe around 1908, and is seen here in a 1943 photo. City directories hint that the building didn’t really flourish. Shops came and went, as did the upstairs tenants. In 1980, Spokane Public Radio moved it, put their studios on the upper floors and stayed until 2016.

The Hoban Building is a brick retail and apartment block at the corner of Carlisle and North Monroe Street, shown Wed., Feb 12, 2020 in North Spokane. The six retail bays and eight apartments upstairs had a spotty rental history with plenty of vacancies through the years. In 1980, Spokane Public Radio moved their studios and offices upstairs and stayed until 2016.
