What happened: Vernon Carey Jr. scored 19 points and University School (FL) (10-2) edged Gonzaga Prep (8-2) 58-53 in a semifinal at the Les Schwab Invitational in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Sharks finished second at the GEICO Nationals last season and were the Florida 5A state champs. Carey, a 6-foot-10 senior, is committed to Duke next season. Scottie Barnes, a 6-foot-8 junior who is being recruited by several Division I schools, added 11 points.

G-Prep was led by Gonzaga commit Anton Watson with 19 points and Liam Lloyd scored 13 points.

Prep led by one late on a field goal by Lloyd, but Carey responded at the other end, then the Sharks made four straight free throws to seal it.

Gonzaga Prep faces Jefferson (OR) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the tournament third-place game.
