When urban explorers walk through abandoned homes, like this farm house on the Palouse, a dark basement can be the most forbidding place to enter. But it holds only the most mundane items, like canned peaches, that tell the story of rugged people who survived decades in remote farm country, in simple houses that were heated by wood originally, then by more modern methods later.
