Snowboarder Ester Ledecka wins surprise Olympic Alpine ski title

Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic made a stunning run to take the Olympic super-G title. A mistake cost Lindsey Vonn a spot on the podium. Ledecka also is a snowboarder and was the 26th racer to take the super-G course. She blazed through it in a time of 1 minute, 21.11 seconds. Defending champion Anna Veith of Austria earned the silver. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein captured bronze.

Switzerland’s Sarah Hoefflin skis to gold in women’s slopestyle

Switzerland’s Sarah Hoefflin is the Olympic champion in women’s slopestyle skiing. The 27-year-old put together an electric final run down the demanding course at Phoenix Snow Park to post a 91.20 and edge teammate Mathilde Gremaud for gold. Gremaud scored 88.00 on the first of her three runs in the finals but couldn’t top Hoefflin.

Hanna Huskova wins Olympic gold in breezy women’s aerials final

Hanna Huskova gave Belarus its second Olympic gold medal in women’s aerials. The 25-year-old Huskova narrowly edged Zhang Xin in a windy final Phoenix Snow Park. Huskova posted a score of 96.14 in the final round of jumping. Kong Fanyu gave China a second medal by taking bronze. Huskova and Zhang were the only two women in the six-person final to land their jumps cleanly.

‘Shirtless’ Tongan skier, others ‘live to fight another day’

One thought crossed Pita Taufatofua’s mind as he maneuvered around the final downhill turn and headed toward the finish line. The “shirtless” Tongan made it cleanly to the finish line in the cross-country ski race. This time in a ski suit. The man who has marched shirtless and oiled up in the last two Olympics didn’t crash and even finished before they closed the course. Those were his two biggest concerns leading up to the race.

‘Super Dario’ pulls off 3-peat in cross-country 15K free

Switzerland’s Dario Cologna has become the first cross-country skier to win three Olympic gold medals in the same event by capturing the 15-kilometer freestyle. “Super Dario,” as he’s known, also won this race in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014. His three-peat gives Switzerland its first gold medal of the Pyeongchang Games.

Canadian women take 1st Olympic showdown against US 2-1

Meghan Agosta and Sara Nurse each scored in the second period, and defending gold medalist Canada clinched the top spot in pool play by edging the United States 2-1 in an early Olympic showdown between the dominant powers in women’s hockey. Genevieve Lacasse made 44 saves, and the Canadians also had two goals. Canada and the United States are the only countries to ever win gold at the Olympics. The Americans have not taken home gold since 1998, while Canada is looking for its fifth straight.
