Heisman winner Marcus Mariota said he’s going to the NFL

Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota declared his eligibility for the NFL draft. The Ducks quarterback announced on Oregon’s website on Wednesday that he would forgo his senior season. The school said he filed paperwork on Wednesday, a day before the NFL deadline. “I will miss being with my teammates,” he said in a statement. “Being a part of this team was something special that I will always treasure.” He is expected to be a high first-round pick in the draft. Mariota won every major award he qualified for, starting with the Heisman Trophy, as well as AP Player of the Year and Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. He set a conference record for most touchdowns in a single season with 58; 42 via pass, 15 on the run and a touchdown catch. – Associated Press

Four corners: Washington State Cougars

Coming up: Thursday vs. Oregon, 8 p.m. (Pac-12 Wash.); Saturday vs. Oregon State, 6 p.m. (Pac-12 Wash.) Outlook: With the students back from break, the Cougars (8-7, 2-1 Pac-12) return home for the first time in more than two weeks to try and turn a good conference start into a great one. DaVonte Lacy and Josh Hawkinson have continued to play well against Pac-12 teams, but it has been the emergence of Jordan Railey (8.7 Pac-12 ppg), Ike Iroegbu (10.0 Pac-12 ppg) and Que Johnson (7.7 Pac-12 ppg) that has made WSU a suddenly dangerous team. First the Cougars will face Ernie Kent’s former team, Oregon, which is off to a surprisingly good start (12-4, 2-1) despite having just seven scholarship players to start the season. Then WSU will face an Oregon State (11-4, 2-1) team that was quietly winning games under first-year coach Wayne Tinkle before it got everyone’s attention with last week’s upset of No. 7 Arizona.

Going into Monday night’s game against Ohio State, the standout junior quarterback said he would trade the Heisman Trophy he won for a national championship because the team honor was more important to him.

Marcus Mariota, Cardale Jones are a contrast in styles

If college football success is all about the quarterback, as so many analysts believe, the knee-jerk reflex is to prepare the green-and-gold confetti tonight at AT&T Stadium and brace for another celebratory speech from Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. On the Ducks’ sideline, Mariota is the Heisman Trophy winner who has been responsible for 56 touchdowns while throwing only three interceptions this season. Teammates speak about him in hushed tones, praising his humility and selfless acts. Included is Mariota’s habit of thanking scout-team players after each practice for their efforts in sharpening the skills of the starters.
