WSU notebook: Mariota saves Ducks

PULLMAN – Washington State’s front seven made life miserable at times on Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. But Mariota returned the favor, overcoming seven sacks with five touchdown passes that carried the second-ranked Ducks to a 38-31 victory Saturday night at Martin Stadium.

Washington State upset bid comes up short versus Oregon

PULLMAN – There were less than a handful of plays in which Washington State didn’t play well enough to beat Oregon on Saturday night. A break here, a break there and the Cougars would be undefeated in the newly-renovated Martin Stadium and the Mike Leach regime would have a win that would resonate long after he finishes coaching. But making those critical few plays are what make the Ducks the No. 2 team in the country, and what made the difference in UO’s 38-31 escape in front 32,952 fans at Martin Stadium.

Jacob Thorpe’s keys to the game: WSU vs. Oregon

4: What went wrong Oregon made big plays when it needed to and Washington State needed one more answer. Despite seven sacks on Marcus Mariota the UO quarterback netted 50 yards on the ground, often when the Cougars badly needed a stop. Also, he missed on only four pass attempts.

2-minute drill

1 Be physical on defense. Few if any teams have the raw speed to keep up with Oregon’s offense, but teams have had success neutralizing the Ducks’ advantage by playing physically and taking out blockers at the beginning of plays. If the Washington State defense sets a physical tone it should be able to get off the field. 2 Play till the whistle. Marcus Mariota is an escape artist playing quarterback and has a special ability to keep plays alive long after it looks like the defenders have him cornered. Some of his biggest plays come as a result of defensive players letting up and assuming he will be sacked only to watch him run past a moment later, so it will be very important for WSU’s defenders to avoid the urge to let their guard down.
