Patriots DC Matt Patricia bringing the beard back to Super Bowl

Most identifiable by his bushy beard, backward-facing ball cap and cargo shorts or cut-off sweatpants no matter what the weather, Matt Patricia will be on the Patriots sideline on Feb. 4, when they face the Philadelphia Eagles in an attempt to win their sixth NFL championship. Then he is expected to go to Detroit to be the next Lions head coach.

Super Bowl sparks revolutionary rivalry for Boston, Philly

The war has begun in Philadelphia and Boston, where the Super Bowl-bound rivals are lightheartedly refusing to sell items from each other’s cities in a sort of “cheesesteak ban heard ‘round the world.” In Boston, one park has banned the sale of cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and any Philadelphia sports paraphernalia. In Philadelphia, Dottie’s Donuts is refusing to make its best-selling Boston cream confection. Instead, they replaced it with something called “The Creamed Boston.”

Danny Amendola making playoffs his playground for Patriots

Patriots receiver Danny Amendola has had a knack for coming up in big moments in the playoffs the past two seasons. Most recently he was the recipient of two touchdown passes, including the winner in their AFC title game win over Jacksonville. Amendola enters his third Super Bowl as New England’s leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns this postseason.

Jim Schwartz turned Eagles’ defense into one of NFL’s best

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz inherited one of the NFL’s worst defenses and turned them into one of the best in less than two years. Schwartz changed the scheme back to a 4-3 base and rebuilt the defense using many of the same players left from the old regime. He also brought a swagger that’s reflected in his players.

Eagles have bought into team-first approach

The Philadelphia Eagles are the first team since the 1990 New York Giants to reach a Super Bowl without a player totaling 1,000 scrimmage yards though running backs Jay Ajayi and LeGarrette Blount and wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith have done so in the past. That group plus Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, wide receiver Nelson Agholor and others have bought into a team-first, unselfish concept.
