Alan Liere: The aging outdoorsman

I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m old. It first became apparent two years ago when I had a choice of a double-fudge brownie or broccoli salad. I chose the salad.

Alan Liere’s fishing-hunting report for Nov. 30

For most hunters, this comes a little late for this year, but if you’re not saving the neck of your big game kill, you’re missing out on what I consider to be the best eating of all (even better than the backstrap or tenderloins).

If you are hunting ducks but haven’t set up on the “honey hole” where most of them want to be, at least make your spread highly visible by adding a few pintail or diver decoys to the outside edge. The black and white colors will attract more attention than a set of just mallards.

Fly Fishing Silver Bow Fly Shop says the Spokane River trout fishing slowed last week for no apparent reason, but that can change in a short time. They suggest using a Hopper/Chernobyl with 3-foot dropper and a caddis pupa or small attractor nymph down below. Another technique is to run a larger caddis pupa with a smaller soft hackle 16 inches below it, or go with a Zirdle Bug streamer with a soft hackle trailing 2 feet below. Fish through the riffles and shallow buckets.

Alan Liere: Taking a permanent break from cell phones

Several years back, I had to cancel a long-anticipated bucket list elk hunting trip because my step-daughter and her fiancée decided at the last minute it would be a fine idea to get married in the fall in Las Vegas. Reluctantly, I unpacked my camo and packed my suit coat so I could attend the wedding ceremony.
