Vandersloot leads Gonzaga to rout over Saint Mary’s

The difference between the best women’s basketball team in the West Coast Conference and the team that sits in second place is, oh, just 69 points. The 23rd-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs raced past Saint Mary’s 106-66 before 3,207 fans at McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday night to go with a 106-77 romp in Moraga, Calif., four weeks ago.

Chiefs fall flat in 5-1 setback to last-place Seattle

For two teams on opposite ends of the Western Conference standings, the Spokane Chiefs certainly have a difficult time with the Seattle Thunderbirds. It was no different at the Arena Wednesday night as the last-place T-Birds embarrassed the lackluster Chiefs 5-1 before a lackluster crowd of 4,119.

Chiefs, Johnson both have goals as WHL season winds down

The Western Hockey League season has come down to a dozen games for the Spokane Chiefs, with eight of them at the Arena, and there couldn’t be more intrigue. Going into tonight’s home game with Seattle, the Chiefs have a one-point lead over Portland in the chase for the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Portland, however, has played two fewer games.

Gonzaga, Washington State continue plans for NCAA tournament

Branding Spokane as the equivalent of Basketball Town USA for the two weekends of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament next month takes a little nerve. Gonzaga, ranked No. 23 in the USA Today ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday, is hosting the first two rounds of the tournament on March 19 and 21. Washington State is the host for the regional at the Arena March 26 and 28, the first time the NCAA put the tournament in the same city in the same year.

Spokane Chiefs whip Tri-City before sellout crowd

The truth is, when Tri-City collected what would have to be considered an easy goal less than five minutes into their Western Hockey League game with the Spokane Chiefs Saturday night, most of the sellout crowd of 10,475 at the Arena had to have a sinking feeling. It’s understandable.

Portland uncorks five goals in 2 minutes to overwhelm Chiefs

In the beginning it seemed like a matter of time before the Spokane Chiefs would make first-place Portland crack. Gonzaga women roll to 24th consecutive WCC basketball victory

The way Gonzaga started against Portland on Friday night, it seemed like the toughest decision Bulldogs basketball coach Kelly Graves was going to have to make was whether to order a pizza – at halftime. That near-surgical precision didn’t last, but the Bulldogs delighted most of the crowd of 4,917, the fourth largest for the GU women at McCarthey Athletic Center, with an 87-67 win that ran their winning streak to 10 games, 24 straight in the West Coast Conference
