North Central’s boys snag fourth straight State 3A title

TACOMA – North Central joined some pretty elite company on Saturday, so elite it dates back to the cinder track days of track and field, when records were incomplete and you have to trust a source. Coach Kelly Walters became that source when the Indians won their fourth straight State 3A boys championship, safely getting the baton around the track at Mt. Tahoma to break a tie with Liberty of Issaquah.

Distance runners get crowd buzzing at 4A/3A regional

As Andrew Gardner surged to the finish line and then stumbled off the edge of the track at Spokane Falls Community College at the conclusion of the 4A boys 1,600 meters Saturday afternoon, an amazing thing happened. A handful of tapped-out 3A boys distance runners who were hanging around the awards stand weaved through the finish-line crowd to whack Gardner on the back and whisper in his ear.

4A/3A Regional track and field athletes take opportunities

Oh, there were the usual great races and the usual dominant winners. There always are at the Eastern Regional 4A and 3A track meet. But the first day of the two-day state qualifying meet at Spokane Falls Community College Friday night was more about opportunity.

Heinen’s efforts for Cusick highlight District 7/9 1B track

With schools and athletes few and far between, it’s easy to dismiss success at the B level, especially in these days of 2B and 1B classifications. Some might say that when it comes to the smallest of the small schools, anyone with a smidgeon of talent can wrack up state gold in track and field.

Shadle Park’s Weitz sets record in first day of district meet

Shadle Park junior Nathan Weitz was pretty much a lock to finish in the top four of the District 8 3A track meet Thursday night and advance to regional next week, so there was no real reason to stomp on the accelerator and blow out the pipes. But after running the 3,200 meters in 9 minutes, 13 seconds too many times to count for the past two years, he had a need for speed.

NC’s Walters slows his pace after receiving stents

Kelly Walters wasn’t at his usual place or pace as his North Central boys track team took on Mead last Thursday afternoon for the Greater Spokane League championship. Walters started at the top of the bleachers at Mt. Spokane, moved to the bottom row where he recounted his ordeal and finally made his way across the field to the backstretch, where he watched the Panthers whip his Indians.

Mead storms to GSL track title

North Central’s distance juggernaut was loading up for the 1,600 meters in a desperate attempt to wrest the Greater Spokane League boys track championship away from Mead in a battle of unbeatens Thursday afternoon at Mt. Spokane. A basketball-camp injury shy of key points in the sprints and hurdles, the Indians figured if they were to have any hope of challenging the Panthers they needed to keep Andrew Gardner from scoring.

Broken bone doesn’t stop Freeman thrower Romey

Given the weather of this spring, it’s no surprise that Morgan Romey – or any other thrower – slipped while throwing the discus a few weeks back. The Freeman senior, runner-up in the shot put and discus at the State 1A meet last year, thought she had a sprain and continued throwing for a couple of more weeks. She even placed fifth in the discus (118 feet, 8 inches) and fourth in the shot put (37-8½) at the Pasco Invitational.
