Doug Clark: Under proposed ‘bill of rights,’ envision beautiful bedlam

The question- and-answer format is being used more and more here at the ol’ S-R (“Shrinking- Review”) as a way to replace that outmoded, space- and-time- consuming process of actual writing and reporting. So, being the good soldier that I am, I will use the Q-and-A today to dissect a controversial and complex topic.

Doug Clark: News as hard to escape as a speeding citation

Returning from vacation is always such an emotionally traumatic time. If President Barack Obama were smart, he’d scratch all that Cash for Clunkers nonsense and instead focus on a federal program that grants every worker a Vacational Loafing Transition.

Music week’s crescendo outstanding

I had major doubts Monday. I didn’t think the seventh annual Spokane Street Music Week could possibly live up to 2008, which collected a record $3,800 for the food bank. Doug Clark: Slim paper no sweat to Omdougsm

The city of Spokane is going through the charade of hiring an ombudsman who will pretend to keep an eye on the cops. Fortunately for you readers, The Spokesman- Review is already blessed with a self-important overseer.

Police overseer job comes with built-in blinders

Spokane’s attempt to hire our first police ombudsman has suffered a horrible setback. No, I don’t mean that only two people bothered to show up at the City Council chambers Friday to take a gander at the ombudsman finalists.

Doug Clark: Saving money and brain cells: Now that’s efficient

Proving that they’re gol-darned serious about saving our tax dollars, Spokane City Council members voted Tuesday night to hire a new efficiency expert. And they’re going pay this person about $120,000 a year (in wages and benefits) until he or she comes up with some really terrific ways to save money.

Wonder where I got this grade-school mindset?

We dignitaries who ascend into the stratosphere of self-importance occasionally are called upon to deliver a lofty speech at a place of higher learning. President Barack Obama, for example, recently made an appearance at the University of Notre Dame.
