Post Falls Extends Season With Win Over Sandpoint

Post Falls' 39-27 win over Sandpoint will stand as one of Trojans coach Jerry Lee's most cherished victories. At least for now. If the Trojans go deep into the State A-1 Division II playoffs that could change. Embarrassed five weeks ago in a 49-6 loss to Lewiston, Post Falls regained respect with its season-extending victory over the Bulldogs in an Inland Empire League finale Friday before an estimated crowd of 2,000 at Barlow Stadium. Post Falls raised its overall record to 8-1 and will travel next Saturday to Eagle near Boise for a first-round playoff game. Sandpoint's once-magical season ended Friday. After seven straight wins in as many weeks, the Bulldogs finished with back-to-back losses. The key to victory - the key to defeat - was quite elementary Friday. Post Falls committed zero turnovers. Sandpoint had five, three of which came on critical fumbles by running back Jeremy Thielbahr. "We beat a great team, they were tough," Lee said over a loud roar and celebration at midfield. "I thought our kids hung in there when things were real critical. (Sandpoint) is so explosive offensively. But we never gave up." Thielbahr, who easily eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark, dashed 84 yards on the second play to open the scoring. Thielbahr finished with 263 yards on 29 carries. The other star running back in the league - the Trojans' Josh Mort - wasn't about to be outpeformed. On Post Falls' second play on the ensuing series, Mort jaunted 76 yards for a touchdown. The point-after failed as the Trojans trailed 7-6. Mort, who rushed for 202 yards on 29 attempts, put the Trojans ahead 12-7 on a 9-yard run. Following a touchdown catch by Sandpoint's Steve Munson, Post Falls seized momentum in a huge way seconds before halftime when quarterback Adam Fehling lobbed a 20-yard TD pass to Shawn Michael with 1.3 seconds left. A two-point conversion gave the Trojans a 20-13 lead at the half. Sandpoint tied the score at 20 midway through the third quarter when Thielbahr plunged in from a yard out. Post Falls took the lead for good when on second-and-15 from its 10 when Fehling found Michael all alone behind the Sandpoint secondary. Lee's son, senior tight end/defensive end Austin, caught the first of two touchdowns on the next series. On third-and-5 from the Sandpoint 10, Fehling hit Lee for the score on a well-executed play-action pattern. That put Post Falls in front 32-20 with 5:57 left. But Sandpoint didn't quit. Taylor lofted a beautiful pass that hit Caleb Bowman in stride three plays following Post Falls' TD and the Bulldog receiver zipped to the end zone to finish the 64-yard connection. Post Falls controlled the ball when it needed to the most on the next series, which concluded with a 20-yard TD lob from Fehling to Lee with 1:13 left. "This was a special (win) because we've had a lot of injuries and key kids down," Lee said. "And this senior class, over 20-some seniors. It was just great to win for those guys." "It means everything," Austin Lee added of the victory. "It's the whole season. I didn't want to end my senior season (on a loss)." Panhandle Picks With Greg Lee

I'm beating Bob Dole and Ross Perot to the punch this week. I'm conceding defeat. OK, perhaps I lost by a landslide to the guests so it's not much of a concession. For the first time in three years, the guests scored a season victory over the Scribe. And for the first time this year, a guest put up a perfect mark. St. Maries volleyball coach Mitch Santos picked 8 of 8. Let's just say I finished a close second. The scoreboard reads: Guests 62 of 77 (.805), Lee 56 of 77 (.727).

Newcomers Lead Teams To Titles Sandpoint Girls, Lake City Boys Win Cross Country Regionals

A pair of first-time winners, both sophomores, led their teams to repeat victories in the A-1 Region I cross country meet Saturday at Farragut State Park. Both runners, Nicole Maloney of Sandpoint and Charlie Miller of Lake City, displayed poise usually expected from frequent winners. They each seized the lead on the final hill on the 3.1-mile course along the picturesque shores of Lake Pend Oreille, and sprinting downhill the final one-quarter mile to comfortable victories.

Lewiston: Mission Accomplished Rice, Bengals Hammer Sandpoint To Seal Inland Empire League Title

Put an exclamation mark behind the title of Inland Empire League football champions for the Lewiston Bengals. The Bengals captured the league like they played all season - in dominating fashion. And make Lewiston quarterback Brad Rice the unanimous pick as the league's most valuable player. The Bengal senior had a hand in all of Lewiston's touchdowns in a telling 34-8 victory Friday over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Bengals Field.

State Playoffs Not Likely For Drager, Mullan

John Drager's final football team at Mullan High School won't be in the state playoffs like most of his previous 30 teams. Unless, of course, the Lakeside Knights stumble in their final two North Star League eight-man games. Don't count on it, though. The Knights have all but clinched the league title, especially with remaining dates against Falls Christian on Friday and, following a bye, Kootenai in two weeks. Lakeside handled Falls Christian (56-6) and Kootenai (62-14) earlier in the season in games shortened by the 45-point mercy rule. Lakeside rebounded Friday from a 40-20 loss to Mullan on Sept. 6 to spank the Tigers 64-14. The game ended, along with the Tigers' hopes of escorting their coach to the playoffs one last time, with 1:19 left in the third quarter when fullback Sam Lozeau and quarterback Ken Pluff connected on a 10-yard touchdown. "The kids thought we were as good as Mullan the last time we played," Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. "But I don't know if we're 50 points better. We sure were (Friday)." Miller respects Drager and will miss Friday night showdowns with his teams. "It's great that one of the last things he'll remember is that Lakeside beat him," Miller said, laughing. "We've been on the short end of things playing his teams (the past 11 years). It's great that they've named the field after him. It's his field. It's an experience to play at Mullan. It's different than any other place you play. It's a unique atmosphere; it's John's atmosphere and has been for 30 some years." Drager isn't going to postpone his retirement to have one more shot at the playoffs. "No," he said, laughing. "I'm done. Just two more games." The field at Mullan will officially be renamed in Drager's honor in a ceremony Friday. This 'n that Coeur d'Alene senior running back Mark Scates has quit. But Scates and coach Bill Anderson have conflicting reasons as to why. "He's going to have to have his (right) shoulder operated on," Anderson said. "He'll definitely be missed." Scates, a standout pitcher on the baseball team, had surgery last winter on his left shoulder (his non-throwing arm) after playing injured the entire football season. He had initially planned on not turning out this fall because he didn't want to risk re-injury, but reconsidered two days into practices. Scates said his right shoulder is fine. "I just wasn't having fun," said Scates, who decided to quit after Coeur d'Alene defeated Moscow 34-10 two weeks ago. The girls district soccer tourney begins Saturday with two state berths on the line. League champion Coeur d'Alene (14-4-1 overall) is heavily favored to capture the district title. Sandpoint, Lewiston, Moscow and Lake City have a shot at the other berth. The matches figure to be hotly contested because the tournament is single elimination. As crazy as it may seem, the teams played 14 league matches to decide little except seeding. All matches Saturday begin at 4 p.m. No.8 seed Bonners Ferry (0-14) is at No. 1 CdA, No. 7 Post Falls (2-10-1) goes to No. 2 Sandpoint (12-3-2), No. 6 Lakeland (4-10) treks to No. 3 Lewiston (8-3-3), and No. 5 Lake City (8-6-2) visits No. 4 Moscow (8-4-3) in what should be the toughest opener. Play resumes Tuesday with the LCMoscow winner visiting the CdA-Bonners Ferry winner and the Lakeland-Lewiston winner traveling to play the Sandpoint-Post Falls winner. Both matches are at 4 p.m. The championship match will be played Thursday at CdA.

Football Teams Boast Many Father-Son Combos

In case you haven't noticed, there's a distinct father-son flavor among Inland Empire League football teams this fall. You're aware of the obvious father (coach)-player (son) connections: Jerry Lee (coach) and Austin (son) at Post Falls; Lake City's Van Troxel (coach) and Chad (son); and Lewiston's Nick Menegas (coach) and Mike (son).

Losses Get More Costly At This Point

While victories won't necessarily lock up state playoff berths for Panhandle high school football teams, losses start to become critical with three weeks remaining in the regular season. Two Inland Empire League and two Intermountain League games Friday could go far in determining playoff berths.

Cda Tops Sandpoint, Wins Volleyball Tourney

In an all-Inland Empire League volleyball showdown, Coeur d'Alene showed why it is leading conference play at the midway point of the season. The Vikings, behind the usual stellar net play of 6-foot-2 Angie Shirley and the steady setting of Kimi Towery, surged past defending State A-1 champion Sandpoint 15-9, 15-9 in the Spike & Dig Tournament championship match Saturday evening at Lake City High School.

Lake City Faces Tough Sandpoint

The Lake City High School football team is vastly improved over last season. Friday night, the Timberwolves (2-2 overall) will find out whether even vast improvement is enough to make them competitive against the state's elite prep teams when they entertain Sandpoint (4-0) in an Inland Empire League opener. Kickoff at LC - and at most other stops in North Idaho - is 7:30.

Lewiston Rolls To 49-6 Victory Over Post Falls

Idaho Lewiston High School football coach Nick Menegas found a simple way to slow down Post Falls running back Josh Mort - never let him on the field. Lewiston did more than stifle Mort, though. The Bengals put a muzzle on all the Trojans, sprinting to a 49-6 victory in the Inland Empire League opener for both teams at Post Falls Junior High School.

Expect Many Points In Big Showdown

Football Post Falls High School football coach Jerry Lee enjoyed not having to answer this week what had become an annual question going into the fourth week. Can your team finally beat Lewiston? Until last fall, Post Falls teams were winless against the Bengals since the teams started playing in 1980. Specifically, the Trojans were 0-16 in the series.
