Home-grown hero

Derek Ryan – on a clock that runs nine hours ahead of Spokane – is technically living in the future. But he thinks about the past – his hometown and all that happened to and for him here – on a daily basis. The Shadle Park graduate was the original Tyler Johnson, if you will. A home-grown hockey player who Spokane Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz made sure was staying home while he played out his Western Hockey League career.

Ex-Chief Ryan holds Spokane in special place

Derek Ryan – on a clock that runs nine hours ahead of Spokane – is technically living in the future. But he thinks about the past – his hometown and all that happened to and for him here – on a daily basis. The Shadle Park graduate was the original Tyler Johnson, if you will. A home-grown hockey player who Spokane Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz made sure was staying home while he played out his Western Hockey League career. A home-grown hockey player who gave fans even more of a reason to back the team in the years it struggled. “The opportunity to play in Spokane is something I wouldn’t trade for the world,” Ryan said via telephone from his current home in Austria, where the 25-year-old is playing professional hockey.

Central Valley upsets Gonzaga Prep

They won’t win a state title this year. They won’t even play for one. But sometimes, pride is more than enough – and on a cold and wet Friday night, in front of a home crowd at Central Valley and a televised audience, even the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups couldn’t rain on the Bears’ parade.

CV on way to volleyball regionals

Sequoia Lofton is the person you love to play with and hate to play against. And she’s typically quite a “killer” for the Central Valley Bears. But it wasn’t the 5-foot-11 senior’s hitting that took center stage on Thursday night.

LC grad January savors WNBA title

Briann January isn’t at Disneyland – and she won’t be any time in the near future. But who needs the happiest place on Earth when you’ve just made a lifelong dream come true?

Spokane Chiefs forward Holmberg tabbed for Team WHL

Things have gone incredibly well for Spokane Chiefs forward Mitch Holmberg this season, and Thursday’s announcement was what you might call a reward for his efforts. Holmberg, 19, was picked to play for Team WHL in the annual Super Series, announced Thursday.

Focus on volleyball gives Clute an edge

Kennadie Clute was going to be a basketball player. And it was apparent – early on – that the height advantage was there for the 6-foot Mt. Spokane senior. She hated that.

Mead claims district volleyball title

The entire question had hardly been vocalized when Mead coach Judy Kight began fighting back tears as she struggled to answer through a cracked voice. Who is No. 11 – the girl who played a total of seven points for the Panthers at the end of their District 8 4A volleyball match against the Central Valley Bears on Tuesday night?

Walchuk’s goal with 24 seconds left lifts Chiefs

If three’s a crowd, imagine what it’s like when nearly 8,000 people are letting you know how they feel. There were 7,713 fans on hand Saturday night at the Arena to watch the Spokane Chiefs welcome back recently traded goalie Mac Engel – who is now playing nearly 700 miles north for the Prince George Cougars.

Helewka’s two goals ignite Chiefs

There wasn’t much Spokane Chiefs coach Don Nachbaur liked during his Tuesday trip to Seattle. His team lost a close game – though it probably shouldn’t have even been close – and also neglected to take care of what needed the most protection that night: the puck.

Chiefs needs to take care of puck

You’ll hear the words “go to the body” echoing off of boards in rinks around the Western Hockey League. Anywhere there is hockey, really. But Spokane Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz had a more appropriate and time-sensitive phrase for the Chiefs to take into consideration following their road loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday: Use your heads.

U-Hi tops CV 6-2 for GSL slowpitch title

Winning the Greater Spokane League slowpitch softball title is becoming old hat at University High. So it’s a good thing the winning part never gets old for head coach Jon Schuh and his Titans, who defeated the rival Central Valley Bears 6-2 on Thursday for their sixth GSL playoff title since the valley schools joined the league seven years ago.

Seniors lead Panthers to GSL volleyball title

There are technically no guarantees in sports – and you’ll never hear Mead coach Judy Kight speaking in such terms – but this seemed like a gimme, long before Tuesday night. That’s not an insult to the University Titans, or any other volleyball team in the Greater Spokane League. It’s a nod to the Panthers, who, in sweeping the host Titans, captured their 10th league title in 23 successful years under Kight.

West Valley edges East Valley

Unfortunately, rivalry games don’t always live up to the hype. But this was not one of those occasions. This was the rivalry game that came down to the last play and the final second on the clock. The kind that causes one team to storm the field and celebrate such a marginal victory, and the other to grapple with the disappointment that comes with being so close.
