Fifth-ranked Eastern rallies for home victory

Speed bumps, Beau Baldwin calls them – those little obstacles that get in the way of a successful football season. Halfway through Saturday afternoon’s game with UC Davis, the Eastern Washington coach and his players had to scale a mile-high wall of frustration en route to a 31-28 win at chilly Roos Field.

The emotions will be mixed but no less intense today when Eastern Washington celebrates Senior Day for one of the most successful football classes in school history. “It’s going to be a whirlwind of emotions,” said linebacker Grant Williams, whose brother, Adam, will fly across the country to join Grant and his parents for the Eagles’ game against UC Davis.

Several soccer area teams bid for semifinal berths

The Mead girls soccer team is on its way to Camas, Wash. – more than 300 miles from home, but light-years from where the Panthers started a few months ago. Better yet, they’re 80 minutes from a trip to the final four of the State 4A tournament. A win in Saturday’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal at Camas would do the trick.

Ship won’t sink

In more ways than one, Whitworth hopes to hit the ground running this season: A challenging early schedule, some big holes to fill, and best of all, coach Matt Logie says, “Some young guys itching to make an impact.” Those new guys will get the chance to help Whitworth do what it does every season - shrug off the loss of several talented players and move on. Last year, in Logie’s first season the Pirates went 26-4 and reached the Sweet 16 of the Division III national tournament for the third straight year.

Bracketology is an inexact science, even more so when you don’t know the exact formula, and especially with two games left until the FCS playoffs. But even with two losses, Eastern Washington appears to a be a sure bet to earn a bye – and possibly a coveted top-four seed – provided the Eagles win their final two games against UC Davis and Portland State.

Jim Hayford didn’t know what to expect when he took over the Eastern Washington basketball program last year. One year later, he could say the same thing. With 10 new players and just two returning starters, Hayford says he’s “cautiously optimistic that despite youth and inexperience, that we will continue to be a postseason team.”

Finally, the Mt. Spokane girls soccer team is tournament-tested, and that’s a good thing, coach Ryan Campanella said. “It was a little rough out there, but the girls pushed through it,” Campanella said after the unbeaten Wildcats outlasted Enumclaw 2-1 in a first-round State 3A game Tuesday night at Spokane Falls Community College.

Seniors spark young Eagles in exhibition

The new-look Eastern Washington basketball team relied on some old hands Sunday afternoon at Reese Court. Amid all the fresh faces in the lineup, it fell to senior guards Kevin Winford and Jeffrey Forbes to spark the Eagles to an easy 96-70 exhibition win over NAIA Concordia.
