Court rules annexation petition can be reconsidered

A Superior Court judge ruled that Liberty Lake can revisit its petition to annex 644 acres between the city and Spokane Valley. The ruling allows the city to pick up where it left off with the annexation, instead of gathering another round of petitions from the landowners. The city could plead its case before Spokane County Boundary Review Board in January, said Lewis Griffin, the city's outgoing city administrator.

Liberty Lake, Post Falls vie for Cabela’s

Liberty Lake and Spokane County are taking steps to attract high-end businesses like outdoor megastore Cabela's that might otherwise locate to Post Falls or Coeur d'Alene. The Liberty Lake City Council this week approved creation of a "tax increment financing" district to make the kind of infrastructure improvements Cabela's or other businesses would need. Spokane County commissioners will vote on it today.

New tax district close to approval

Liberty Lake and Spokane County are closing in on forming a joint taxing district that will fund public improvements and, hopefully, attract dollars and jobs to the region. The proposed district includes 1,300 acres west of Liberty Lake – a portion of which Liberty Lake hopes to annex. While the land is mostly fields, developers plan to create a community with homes, apartments, offices, light industry and sales-tax generating retailers, said Wayne Frost, general manager of Centennial Properties Inc. a major landholder.

A local company is transforming a neglected RV storage facility into a Xerox distributorship. OfficeTECH Inc. purchased the 9,000-square-foot building at 6310 E. Sprague Ave. for about $500,000. The company will spend $300,000 renovating it, said B.K. Powell, who owns OfficeTECH Inc. with his wife and business partner, Julie Olsen.

Help for families

When Shirlee Harth was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at age 76, her family was willing to do whatever it took to help her stay at home. For nearly six years, Harth's husband cared for her with help from a visiting nurse and a devoted daughter, Pam Heeter. "It was really difficult, but we wanted to keep her at home as long as possible. We didn't find a facility until about one and a half years ago," said Heeter, a 57-year-old South Hill resident. After Harth fell and broke her leg, the family visited a handful of places before choosing Sunshine Gardens, a skilled-nursing center off University Road in Spokane Valley.

Council passes Resolution 84

Liberty Lake City Council passed a resolution on Tuesday that allows Mayor Steve Peterson to meet with the county and local landowners to talk about forming a joint tax district to make infrastructure improvements that would attract commercial and retail development. Major beneficiaries of the improvements include Liberty Lake Land Co. and Centennial Properties. Centennial Properties Inc. is a subsidiary of Cowles Publishing Co., owners of The Spokesman-Review.
