To get an idea of how far and rapidly Rachael Schurman came in volleyball, until the eighth grade, Mead coach Judy Kight didn't even know her. "I usually know the kids from the third grade on," said Kight, who, like most high school volleyball coaches, follows the youth programs. "I had no idea who she was."

Busy time of year for many area ladies golf groups

It's annual August catchup week for ladies golf group results with as many as three weeks of competitions to report. Painted Hills Ladies League reporter Theresa Zacher e-mailed on Aug. 3 that, "nothing exciting happened, except for the evening players (who) were unable to play due to high winds and thunderstorms."

The good news is that Larry Schreck's Wenatchee fruit stand between Frederick and Empire on Argonne Road in Millwood has been in business this summer. The better news is that Schreck has been there to man it. For years Schreck has been bringing in produce from Wenatchee, where he's a resident and longtime teacher, for sale on the family property.

McDonald’s, Dr. DeCounter DDS league winners

The Spokane Valley Baseball League season came to an end with two well-played title games in the youth Midget and PeeWee league playoffs. McDonald's (Adams) defeated White Elephant (University) 4-2 for the Midget crown and Dr. DeCounter DDS (Pasadena) beat Mountain Dew (Liberty Lake) 5-2 to win the Pee Wee championship.

Stars win 3rd tourney of summer

The Spokane Stars completed an unprecedented summer basketball "triple crown" with last weekend's 9-0 run through the Midsummer Night's Madness Western United States basketball championships. "Nothing in Spokane club basketball-wise has been close to what they accomplished," said Stars coach Ron Adams. "It's something I've never experienced before."

Team petitions to use custom shuttle bus

Clarkston High School wrestling booster Steve Barham's $25,000 labor of love, a bus he donated to the school for use by the team, sits in storage at a cost of $200 per month to Barham. The 25-seat airport shuttle-style vehicle, painted in school colors and with a school mascot Bantams decal, is dazzling. The inside, with such amenities as drop-down LCD monitors and sound system, even specially installed seat belts, is even more impressive.

Grocery Outlet didn't beat themselves and, as a result, no one else beat them either. The first champion of Spokane Valley Baseball playoffs is the North Pines Giants League team, with a relatively new look but a second-straight undefeated season.

The Senior (AAA) American Legion Spokane Valley Cannons saw their baseball season come to an end. But for Junior (AA) teams Spokane Athletic Supply (Central Valley) and East Valley, the season goes on this weekend in Spokane. East Valley opens the 16-team double elimination Junior American Legion state tournament against the Kennewick Bandits Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Shadle Park's Al K. Jackson Field.

One day, current Central Valley and East Valley AA American Legion baseball team players may join forces and help the Senior League Cannons play in a state tournament. As of now both teams can be content in that knowledge that they will do so separately next week. The two teams are among four league qualifiers to the 16-team State AA championships in Spokane.

Unselfish play both offensively and defensively and team rebounding have been the essence of Spokane Stars basketball during its current barnstorming tour of high profile tournaments. The trail began at the End of the Trail tournament in Oregon City, where the Stars ended a four-year unbeaten streak by the nation's top team, the California Swish, en route to the championship of the Red Division.

Grocery Outlet winning streak at 20

In a showdown of Spokane Valley Baseball League Giants leaders, Grocery Outlet from North Pines ran its two-year winning streak to 20 games. The defending division champions are 7-0 this year following a 7-4 win over Blasingame Insurance. Grocery Outlet leads Blasingame, from Centennial, and Mountain View, winners of six straight games, by two games with five remaining.

Olson promoted to head boys basketball coach at Ferris High

Ferris High junior varsity basketball coach Barry Olson has been chosen the new head Saxons boys coach, replacing Don Van Lierop, whose contract was not renewed in May. Olson's selection was announced in a press release by Spokane Public Schools. The school district had decided not to renew Van Lierop's supplemental coaching contract, stating it wanted to take the program in a new direction.

Van Lierop not done with district

The boys basketball coaching situation at Ferris High School took another turn with the announcement Wednesday that junior varsity coach Barry Olson would replace Don Van Lierop to head the program, but the former coach's saga isn't over yet. "I'm kind of surprised they announced it already," said Olson. "I wasn't sure whether they'd wait until they knew what outcome they had."

SAS, Kimmel take first, third in Legion tourney

It's been awhile since Valley teams had an impact on the American Legion Fourth of July Junior baseball tournament, but this year both Spokane Athletic Supply (Central Valley) and Kimmel Athletic (University) came up big. SAS finished first and Kimmel third last weekend during the 12-team tournament. The Central Valley team won its second tournament title, the last in 1996 when it beat University for the crown.

Time for Stars to shine

For Spokane Stars players like Angela Hartill, the month of July is vital. They will, over the next three weeks, hone their basketball skills against some of the nation's best high school players, be scrutinized by college basketball coaches and, yes, simply enjoy the experience. "I'm just trying to improve and get better every game," the 6-foot-3 Riverside High athlete said, "and just have fun along the way."

Beyond the first two teams in the Spokane Valley Baseball Giants League, nothing is for certain. Grocery Outlet (North Pines) was still unbeaten and Blasingame Insurance remains second at 5-1. Behind them any of six teams are still in the hunt for playoff berths.
