Say “Lake Coeur d’Alene” in Spokane and most people think of boating or maybe swimming off the beaches at Coeur d’Alene City Park and taking a walk on the floating docks. Yet there are many other destinations around this gorgeous lake regardless if you come by boat, car or bicycle. If you’ve never been down the east side of Lake Coeur d’Alene, now is the time to go. From Spokane, take I-90 east through Coeur d’Alene and take Exit 22 at Wolf Lodge Bay, then go south on Highway 97 and prepare to be dazzled.

Ambulance ride turns costly

Howard Hickman never had a problem with his health insurance coverage. The retired Union Pacific employee and Navy veteran said he has 100 percent coverage rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs and health insurance through Union Pacific. And he has Medicare. So he was quite surprised when American Medical Response, an ambulance company based in Modesto, Calif., threatened to send him to collection over his last ambulance ride.

Garland Street Fair fills district with annual wizardry

Last year, more than 10,000 people made their way to Garland Avenue for the street fair, and this year organizers expect at least the same number to show up. “We have really put a lot of work into it,” said Tracy Mielke, owner of A Bead Addict’s Attic on Garland and one of the street fair organizers. “We have more vendors signed up at this point than we’ve ever had before.”

Writers to host ‘story walk’

There is an interesting little walking tour happening downtown Aug. 15. Nicki Sabalu and a group of friends have collected nine personal stories about downtown landmarks and places in a booklet. The writers of the stories will gather on Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Community Building, 35 W. Main Ave., and anyone who’s interested can join them on a walk from place to place.

Hillyard gets head start on next year’s centennial festival

The Hillyard Festival Association dug deep into files, books and pictures, and came up with 1911 as the first year there was some sort of community festival in the Spokane neighborhood. So they’re calling this year’s celebration “Hillyard Festival 2010 – 99 years of celebrating the Hillyard Neighborhood.” “This year’s theme is Pulling Together,” said Luke Tolley, association secretary. “We have really put a lot into it this year. We’re looking at it as sort of gearing up for next year’s 100-year celebration.”
